McCain, even though he won't be formally declared so until September, has clenched the GOP nomination. I have to be honest, he was not my first choice, but I'm open to voting for him. And here's why...he's a hawk when it comes to foreign diplomacy. While I have come to strongly disagree with our reason for going to war with Iraq, I believe that we owe it to the people of Iraq to finish the job we've started. I believe McCain is more qualified than any other candidate to make policy changes necessary to better equip our soldiers and see this mission through to victory. I also believe he is best suited (in a race between him and Obama or Clinton) to reduce our deficit, while still upholding conservative values such as smaller government, tax-cuts for the middle class, education vouchers, etc. And, he believes in the same God I do...and that, to me, is of vital importance as there is a spiritual battle raging on that is far greater than any war on this earth...past, present or future.
I am curious to see who he selects as a running mate, however...I doubt it will change my vote, but it will make a difference in my enthusiasm in going to the polls.
I will be going to the polls, however...no matter how disenfranchised I may be with the selection on the ballot or on the media spin that got us to this point (that's a whole other post!). It's a duty and a privilege too precious to pass up.
As far as the race for the Democratic nomination...I have to be honest, I'm finding this entire thing amusing. It's clear to everyone, except the Clinton campaign, that Obama has won, yet Hillary continues to hold on. Obama's pledged delegate lead is insurmountable and there is no way that Hillary can catch up, unless she plans to steal the election. Which, she promised earlier in her campaign that she would not do, but she recently switched her position and says she plans to do just that. Hillary is willing to overturn the will of the voters by getting pledged delegates to turn against their own voters, thus stealing the nomination. Can you imagine how that would play out with the Barack supporters? There's no way they would vote for her! In a year when the Democratic candidate has a good chance of becoming the next president, she is willing to sink the DNC's chance of a victory because of her win-at-all-costs campaign policy??? And this week, she had the nerve to suggest that Obama could/should become her running mate, even though she is in 2nd place and he has a clear lead??? It's all craziness...and, quite entertaining.
So, to Hillary...I say "Go for it! Because every day you stay in the race from here on out, is a day you're helping John McCain win."
