So...this is something that happened Friday, but the more I think about it (and the more the embarassment fades) the funnier I think it is...so I thought I'd share it with all of you.
Friday was our Homeschool Book Group...each of the students took turns getting up in front of the other children to give oral book reports. Well, my son Lucas was the first to go and then he sat patiently (well, patiently for him) and waited for the other 20 or so students to give their reports. The last to go was our friend, Brianna. (Now...I wasn't here for this part of the story because my daughter fell off her chair and hit her head on the wall...long story for another time.) So...I came back into the room to see my 11 year old motioning me to come to him with "the look". This "look" usually translates into "you'll never believe what Lucas did...". I know this look well...so, anyway, I casually made my way to him and he tells me that in the middle of Brianna's book report, during a pause in which she was looking for a particular page to share with the group, Lucas says "Hurry up, I'm gettin' old here!" Now...if you know Lucas, and you know our family, we're a bunch of joksters and this comment would not be out of line at our house, everyone would laugh...and no one's feelings would be hurt. BUT...at homeschool group??? I calmly took Lucas aside and explained to him that he needed to apologize to Brianna and that it was not the right time or place to make that kind of comment, because he might have hurt Brianna's feelings. So...he went over to Brianna to say sorry and she responded with "I don't care, Lucas" and a look of "what on earth are you apologizing for?" (same sense of humor, I suppose)
So, Lucas came back over to me to let me know he had "made it right" with Brianna and, wanting to make sure he understood what he did wrong, I reiterrated with him, "You do understand why this wasn't funny, right?"...and he says (pausing for effect)...
"Yeah, 'cause no one laughed."

Hahahahaha! Ok, that was sooo...funny at that time (and still is funny)! I only didn't laugh because I didn't think that it would be appropriate for me to bah-hah out loud in front of everyone - in a mixed group! Fortunately, Brianna's used to our sense of humor too. We love you Lucas!
