I recently finished The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Phenomenal book! It took me a little while to get into it...but about a quarter of the way through, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. It took me several days to make it to page 100, but I finished the rest in less than a day. I was trying to explain to a friend what it was that I loved so much about it and this is what struck me the most. I could have read an entire text book on Afghanistan or the people of Afghanistan, and would not have learned nearly as much about who they are, their culture, beliefs, family structure and cultural nuances, as I did by reading this book.
This book came to life...the pain and the joy of relationships, the smells and sounds of the city, the beauty and the brutality of the characters...the honesty...the irony...all woven together in an enlightening way. It easily soared to my list of top ten favorite books!
If you haven't read it yet, you have until November 2007...when the movie is released!!
