May He Rest In Peace...

We are mourning the loss of yet another family pet. Today, we said good-bye to our faithful friend and fish, "Shark-Bait, Ooo ha ha".

After watching him struggle to stay right side up for awhile, Jeremiah (Shark-Bait's official owner) decided that we should do the humane thing and put him out of his misery, rather than let him suffer and die alone in his fish bowl. So, Jeremiah and I ladled him out of his fish bowl and said our good-byes at the porcelain throne. Then, in one flush, he was gone.

Jeremiah handled it well, stating that he was okay with it because he knew that "Shark-Bait, Ooo ha ha had lived well beyond his expiration date". We then explained to Lucas and Michaella what happened. Lucas, being the encourager he is, said "well, at least he got to visit his friends in the ocean before he died." (Apparently all drains really
do lead to the ocean.) And, my usually sweet daughter burst into angry tears and screamed..."MOM! You're a FISH MURDERER!!"

So...things I learned today:
  1. Fish are hard to catch with a ladle, even nearly dead ones.
  2. 12 year olds, while overly emotional about everything else, handle the loss of their fish pretty well.
  3. Everything you see in a Disney movie is 100% true.
  4. And last but not least...I'm a fish murderer.

Oh we have flushed many a fish down the porcelain throne. My kids cry, but then are quick to turn around and ask if we can go buy another one. Which, I have found, takes away the sadness.

So, I guess that I'm a fish killer too - given that some of the fishies that we've flushed have never been fully floating on top.

I swear I didn't touch that fish. In fact I'm not sure I knew that you had one. We gave up on fish years ago after one leapt to his death to escape us.
